CPSM Announces New Assistant Registrar of Quality Department

CPSM is pleased to announce that after a competitive selection process, Sonja Bruin, MBA MBBS CCFP(EM), has been hired as Assistant Registrar of the Quality Department, effective November 25.

The Quality Department oversees the Prescribing Practices Program, Quality Assurance and Improvement programs that are critical for achieving our legislated responsibility to monitor the professional competence of medical practice in Manitoba. The Manitoba Quality Assurance Program, which is responsible for establishing standards and inspecting diagnostic and non-hospital medical and surgical facilities, is also housed under Quality. In 2025, the department will add a Restorative Practices Program to support the implementation of a new Standard of Practice aimed at eliminating anti-Indigenous racism in medical care.  

Dr. Bruin has served as a medical consultant in the Quality Department since 2022 and most recently acted as Interim Director, a position left open after the previous Assistant Registrar of Quality became Registrar and CEO. During that time, Dr. Bruin represented CPSM internationally, presenting on the importance of self-regulation at the Emergency Medicine Update Europe in Alsace, France.

“Dr. Bruin has demonstrated leadership and vision for how to advance the work of the Quality Department with humanity and humility,” said Dr. Mihalchuk, CPSM Registrar and CEO. “She is a dedicated champion for fostering a continuous quality improvement mindset among registrants, which has positively impacted program engagement and outcomes.”

She graduated from the Northern Remote Residency Program at the University of Manitoba and has been practicing with Ongomiizwin Health Services since. She will maintain her practice in Urgent Care/Rural Emergency Medicine and continue her work with Ongomiizwin Health Services.

Of her new role, Dr. Bruin stated, “it is an honour to be part of this work supporting registrants in providing the best care to Manitobans. I am passionate about reducing the health inequities that exist in an inclusive and respectful manner.”
