Canadian medical regulatory authorities are improving access for internationally trained physicians
We are working with medical regulators across Canada and the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada (FMRAC) to help qualified internationally trained physicians enter practice more efficiently —while maintaining high standards of medical competence and patient safety.
FMRAC has approved and recommended that the medical education, postgraduate training, specialty certification, and regulatory systems of Belgium, Denmark, Japan, and Germany be recognized as comparable to those in Canada, using a new evaluation framework, and that physicians from those countries be provided accelerated pathways to licensure, including full licensure, where possible.
This milestone reflects the combined expertise of Canada’s provincial and territorial medical regulators and supports a more consistent and streamlined approach to licensure, helping more physicians provide safe care to Canadians.
Shared assessments can reduce unnecessary duplication and support more consistent pathways to licensure for qualified internationally trained physicians. Each provincial and territorial regulator retains authority over its licensing decisions and requirements.
CPSM and all provincial regulators will continue to make licensing decisions based on their own requirements.
