Pride Month
CPSM celebrates and honours the rich diversity of all 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
During Pride Month, we recognize the courage and resilience that 2SLGBTQIA+ communities have demonstrated for decades and recognize their role in guiding society to be more inclusive.
We are committed to promoting inclusivity, understanding, and respect in medical practice always, but speaking about inclusivity is particularly essential during Pride Month. We acknowledge the many CPSM registrants who demonstrate allyship and are dedicated to improving equitable medical care.
Every patient in Manitoba deserves dignity, respect, and quality care. As a regulator, it is critical to ensure that discriminatory barriers do not impact the medical care Manitobans receive. Establishing safe and welcoming environments where patients feel comfortable and supported is the first step everyone can take.
There are various, small actionable things you can do to create a welcoming environment if you aren’t doing so already:
Materials: Add 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive signage/posters and reading materials to waiting rooms and clinic.
Ask: Train staff to ask and use names and pronouns correctly and consistently.
Forms: Include a space for both legal name and preferred name. Include a space for both gender and sex, as well as pronouns.
Inclusive Medical Care
We have previously addressed the importance of providing gender-affirming care. Primary care providers are well-positioned to support patients requiring this type of care, and many resources are available.
