Statement on the passing of AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick
CPSM is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick.
Our condolences go out to her family, friends, and community. Her absence will be deeply felt by many who had the honour of knowing her.
She was an extraordinary leader who led with grace and gumption. Re-elected as AMC Grand Chief this July, she exemplified her passion for representing First Nations in Manitoba and her commitment to enhancing the lives of First Nations People.
Her leadership left a profound impact on CPSM. She welcomed our leadership to a Special Chiefs Assembly in early 2023 and accepted CPSM’s apology on behalf of the medical profession to the Anishinaabeg, Anishininewuk, Dakota Oyate, Denesuline, and Nehethowuk Nations for the racism they have experienced in their medical care in Manitoba. This was a significant moment for which we will always remain grateful.
May her legacy inspire and continue to guide us all toward true reconciliation.
