CLINICAL ASSISTANT (REGULATED ASSOCIATE MEMBER – FULL)

 A Clinical Assistant may practise only under:

  1. A contract of supervision with a Regulated Member, and
  2. A practice description approved by the Registrar. 

Clinical Assistants are not entitled to practise without a supervising physician. The supervising physician must fulfil their responsibilities under a Contract of Supervision.

A Clinical Assistant may not use the title “doctor” or any title, abbreviation or equivalent in any language that implies that you are a “duly qualified medical practitioner.” 

Please note:

  • An offer of employment is not required to apply for Regulated Associate Member – Clinical Assistant – Full.
  • However, registration cannot be granted without an offer of employment.
  • Applications for Regulated Associate Member – Clinical Assistant – Full are only valid for 6 months. 

 

Requirements

You must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Satisfactory completion of an approved assessment; and
  • One of the following: 

    o   hold a degree in medicine from a nationally approved faculty of medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from a school in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College accreditation;

    o   be a graduate of an approved and accredited physician assistant or clinical assistant training program, that is restricted to a field of practice;

    o   be a member in good standing of a regulated health profession in Manitoba;

    o   hold certification at the highest level of emergency medical attendant certification.

  • Meet current English Language Proficiency requirements.

How to Apply for Registration 

Before applying, please note:

  • Ensure your medical diploma is submitted to PhysiciansApply, is source verified and that your account is shared with CPSM. 
  • Applications are reviewed in the order they are received.
  • To avoid delays in processing your application, please ensure all documentation is complete.
  • While an offer of employment is not required to submit an application, if you have been offered employment, please indicate on your application. Employment opportunities can be found at Health Careers Manitoba.

2. Once your application request is received and reviewed, you will receive further information on how to access the application through the CPSM Portal.

3. Once your completed application and documentation fee are received (please note fees are non-refundable - click here to view the Fee Bylaw), you will receive an email regarding eligibility and a list of required documents. Some of the documents include, but are not limited to, additional required fees, professional liability insurance and identification (i.e. Canadian Passport or passport and one of the following: work permit, Permanent Resident Status or Canadian Citizenship).

4. If employment is offered, your employer will submit a Practice Description for CPSM approval. Once approved, your employer will submit a Contract of Supervision to CPSM and they should contact CPSM to initiate this process.

5. Registration in the Regulated Member – Clinical Assistant Full Membership, Class may be issued.

Requirements

You must meet one of the following eligibility criteria to apply:

  1. Graduated from the Physician Assistant Education Program at the University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine. 
  2. Must:
    • Be a graduate of a physician assistant training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) in the United States, and
    • Have passed the examination set by the NCCPA, and 
    • Hold the designation "PA-C" 
  3. Graduated from another physician assistant training program approved by the Council.

Council-approved physician assistant training programs are the Canadian Forces Physician Assistant Training Program, the McMaster University Program, and the PA Education administered by the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine.
