REGULATED ASSOCIATE MEMBER – ASSESSMENT CANDIDATE – FAMILY PRACTICE

The assessment class is for international medical graduates who obtained postgraduate training outside of Canada and the United States and whose jurisdiction is not recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

The Practice Ready Assessment – Family Practice, is a three-month assessment program for family physicians.

Requirements

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply:

  • Hold a medical degree from a nationally approved faculty of medicine, or
  • Hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from a school in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College accreditation.
  • Satisfactory completion of two years of post-graduate clinical training in family medicine (i.e. rotations in general medicine, general surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecology) that is accredited with a national post-graduate training authority at the time training was taken, OR;
  • Satisfactory completion of one year of post-graduate clinical training in family medicine (i.e. rotations in general medicine, general surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecology) and have a total of at least three years practice experience in family medicine in the preceding five-year period.
  • Meet current English Language Proficiency requirements. 

 

How to Apply for Registration

1. Ensure all documents are submitted to and source verified by PhysicansApply.ca. Document sharing must be enabled for CPSM and the documents include:

  • medical diploma
  • internship document
  • family medicine postgraduate training document
  • specialty certificate (if applicable)

2. Applications must first be made to the University of Manitoba, International Medical Graduate Program, Family Physician Assessment (PRA MB-FP) – (click on the link for more information regarding intake dates and the application process).

NOTE: If you are chosen by the University, your name will be forwarded to CPSM. If your documents are not submitted or verified at PhysiciansApply.ca, you may lose your opportunity to be accepted.

Please do not apply to CPSM without receiving confirmation you have been selected. 

3. CPSM will contact you to complete an Application (AMR) through PhysiciansApply.ca.  AMR fees from the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and CPSM documentation fee will be required at that time. Please note fees are non-refundable.

CPSM will receive your application directly from the MCC and will review your postgraduate training and practice experience to ensure requirements are met. Once the review has been completed, you will receive an email from CPSM with a list of outstanding documents. Some of the documents include but are not limited to, the balance of documentation feereferences, evidence of good standing, satisfactory criminal record and abuse checks, etc.

4. If CPSM receives confirmation from the University of Manitoba IMG Program that the assessment has been scheduled, and all documentation is complete, a certificate of practice (licence) and a certificate of registration will be issued.

Documentation includes the required fees, practice undertaking, professional liability insurance and identification (i.e. Canadian Passport or Passport and one of the following: work permit, Permanent Resident Status or Canadian Citizenship). 

 

REGULATED ASSOCIATE MEMBER – ASSESSMENT CANDIDATE – SPECIALTY PRACTICE

 

The assessment class is for international medical graduates who obtained postgraduate training outside of Canada and the United States (Approved Fields of Specialty Practice for Assessment).

 

The Practice Ready Assessment – Specialty Practice is a practice-ready assessment program for international medical graduates who can practice independently and do not require further residency training.

An employer or regional health authority must sponsor a physician to participate in the Practice Ready Assessment – Manitoba (PRA MB-SP). 

Requirements 

  • Hold a medical degree from a nationally approved faculty of medicine, or
  • Hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from a school in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College accreditation.
  • Hold the qualifications to engage independently listed here in the practice of medicine in a specialty field of practice from the jurisdiction where you trained and completed an acceptable postgraduate clinical training program in your intended field of practice.
  • Meet current English Language Proficiency requirements. 

 

How to Apply for Registration

NOTE: Please do not apply until you have confirmed steps 1-3 as applications expire six months from the date they are received.

2. Ensure there is an employment/sponsorship opportunity in your specialty through Health Careers Manitoba

3. Complete an Application (AMR) through PhysiciansApply.ca. AMR fees from the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and CPSM documentation fee will be required at that time. Please note that fees are non-refundable.

CPSM will receive your application directly from the MCC and will review your postgraduate training and practice experience to ensure requirements are met. Once the review has been completed, you will receive an email from CPSM with a list of outstanding documents. 4. Should CPSM requirements be met, Manitoba Careers Manitoba and the University of Manitoba International Medical Graduate Program (IMG) will be informed of your eligibility for registration.

5. If CPSM receives confirmation from the University of Manitoba IMG Program that the assessment has been scheduled, and all documentation is complete, a certificate of practice (licence) and a certificate of registration will be issued.

MEDICAL LICENSURE PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES (MLPIMG)

The Medical Licensure Program for International Medical Graduates (MLPIMG) at the University of Manitoba is one of the International Medical Graduate programs. This program is for physicians who have trained in family practice only. Applications must be made directly to the program by the designated intake date. 

Should you be chosen by the program, your name will be referred to CPSM to ensure that you meet the postgraduate training and English Language Proficiency Requirements.

CPSM Requirements

  • Hold a medical degree from a nationally approved faculty of medicine; or
  • Hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from a school in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College accreditation.
  • Satisfactory completion of two years of post-graduate clinical training in family medicine (i.e. rotations in general medicine, general surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecology).  
  • Meet current English Language Proficiency requirements. 

Acceptance into the MLPIMG Training Program

1. Once CPSM receives confirmation from the University of Manitoba of your acceptance into the program, CPSM will contact you directly with instructions for application.  

All outstanding documentation will be required at this time (including, but not limited to fees, references, criminal record and abuse registry checks, evidence of good standing(s), identification (i.e. Canadian Passport or Passport and one of the following: work permit, Permanent Resident Status or Canadian Citizenship).

2. Once all documentation is received and completed, registration will be issued starting July 1 until June 30.
