Public Consultation: Amendments to the Standard of Practice for Research
Background
CPSM is updating the Standard of Practice on Research.
One of the provisions in the Standard is that research projects must be approved by a Canadian University or medical regulatory authority. CPSM does not have the capacity to act as a Research Ethics Board (REB); this only leaves one approval body in Manitoba – Bannatyne Research Ethics Board (BREB) at the University of Manitoba.
Amendments
CPSM proposes that the approval of research from CPSM be replaced with the approval by a Research Ethics Board (REB) in compliance with the Tri-Council Group – Medical Research Council (MRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
In the Joint Task Force to Reduce Administrative Burdens on Physicians Progress Report #1 published by the Government of Manitoba and Doctors in May, physician-researchers described the research review processes by the university and Shared Health as “…overly complicated with an opportunity to reduce duplication and streamline.”
This amendment will enhance opportunities for research approval for CPSM registrants.
